A
It was late in the evening one lonely December
I thought to myself it is time for a fire
I was pitched in a gully, I needed some kindling
So I grabbed me a hatchet and hacked through the briar

A
Not finding much wood in the brush round my tentsite
I sought out a hillside that was just down the road
I walked till I came to a secluded turnoff
A spot where I'd noticed some deadwood before

B
I chopped and I chopped, the whole place was deserted
There was no one to bother me or to complain
I chopped and I chopped like no mortal could stop me
I chopped and found plenty wood for to burn

A
No sooner had I tied the sticks up in bundles
A couple of headlights shone out on the road
Sliced into the turnoff, rolled towards me quite slowly
A ghostly pale gray silver thunderbird

B
It rolled and it rolled and it rolled right up to me
Not dangerous but freakish in the way of such things
For no kick of dust and no rumble of engine
Betrayed that ghostly silver gray thunderbird

A
And there at the wheel was a gray ghostly figure
With pale skinny fingers a-clutchin the wheel
Not turning to see me but staring straight forward
A dead man was driving that ghost thunderbird

B
It rolled and it rolled and it rolled right up to me
It didn't stop there but it jumped o'er the curb
It rolled up the hill like a stormcloud at midnight
A corruption of nature that gray thunderbird

A
About 50 feet up it got caught in some brush there
And it came to a rest with the greatest of ease
I roused from my shock and ran back to my gully
And left there behind that grey ghost thunderbird

B
It rolled and it rolled and it rolled right up to me
It didn't stop there but it jumped o'er the curb
It rolled up the hill like a stormcloud at midnight
A corruption of nature that gray thunderbird
