Lyrics

So come on now it's time to eat
Come fill your belly and warm your feet
Pass the dishes all to and fro
We'll laugh and sing and then we'll go

Too long, too long since I seen you
With your run down stockings
And your broken shoe
But I don't care what's on your feet
Come on now it's time to eat
Come on now it's time to eat

Too many hours we've wiled away
Without a smile to brighten day
But here we are all off the clock
Let's make the world to reel and rock

Too long, too long since I seen you
With your run down stockings
And your broken shoe
But I don't care what's on your feet
Come on now it's time to eat
Come on now it's time to eat

The Story

Written in the spring of 2023 as a call-and-response invitation to the table. One of my heroes Greg Boardman of Lewiston, Maine, wrote a song, now widely sung in Maine, called "The Welcome Table". It's a great thing to sing as folks are gathering for a meal, and I thought it could be a fun challenge to write such a song myself. Here's the result!

Notes

It helps to teach the chorus line by line with folks who aren't familiar with it. OR... if you're pressed for time, sing the chorus solo, and just have the assembled masses sing the echo part on the verses, and the burden of "Come on now it's time to eat". Size up your crowd and let it rip!
